FICTION

Fiction are a quartet from London. James Howard and brothers Mike and Nick Barrett have played music together for years. Daniel Djan joined in early 2009 to complete the line-up.
Fiction ignore the rules of a ‘regular’ set up: with the absence of a conventional drummer, Mike and James switch and swap between a stand-up drum setup, lead vocal duties, and their own instruments, keys and guitar respectively. Nick’s guitar work combines an intensely oblique approach with a respect and excitement for pop melody, and Daniel’s solid, Weymouth-esque bass provides the glue that keeps the songs from falling apart– as their arrangements often hint at doing. Lyrically they steer clear of social realism, but there lies a confessional honesty at the heart of their obtuseness.
Their startlingly idiosyncratic approach to music makes for a hugely energetic live experience, with melodies surfacing and diving around pounding drumbeats, building up into little moments of perfect joy.
Fiction have recently recorded a Radio 1 session for Huw Stephens, and will be releasing Curiosity/ Zebra Crossing as a 7” on Offset Recordings in March 2010. They also co-run Adults club night at the Macbeth with Is Tropical.

KURTZ

“Kurtz are a two piece noise attack, think Girrafes? Girrafes!/That Fucking Tank/Death From Above/Lightning bolt type sounds. The 6 tracks contained on this, their debut EP are every bit as primitive and tribal as their name suggests but they also find time to switch to melodies and rhythms a lot more intricate and sparse. This switch makes for a an EP that manages to maintain interest and excitement throughout.” -separatedbymotorways
