NEWSLETTER / 092010

Hello everyone,

Summer’s over, its raining, the builders are slowly blocking out all the sunlight at OM HQ and its getting colder and more wintery by the day, which means it’s almost time for another year of Off Modern events at Corsica Studios. The first one back is on October 7th, we’ll be releasing line-ups and details pretty soon. Hold tight.

Before that though, if you happen to be in Paris on the 22rd of September, Off Modern are hosting an event at the Nouveau Casino, which is on the Rue Oberkampf. If you’re in Paris or just want to make the journey over, we’ll have all the details confirmed very shortly, but housewives’ favourites Fiction will be making the trip with us to break the hearts of a load of Parisian girls. It’s going to be an evening full of limitless fun, so come join us on a derive between all-night bars and a dip in the Seine.

The next item of news is even more of a long shot really, but if you’re in Tokyo on the 11th of September, Off Modern will be at the Tokyo Magazine Library, which is taking place at GALERIE VIE in the Aoyama district of Tokyo. If you happen to find yourself in Tokyo then go check it out.

In other Journal news you can now buy issue one from the ICA bookshop, LMNOP Shop, in Brighton and from Ras Gallery, in Barcelona. We are currently compiling the second issue of the journal, if you’d like to submit anything, the please drop an email to contact@offmodern.com, if we like it, we’ll get in touch.

Finally, our good friends over at Holy Ghost have an exhibition running at CAMP, on Old Street, the private view is tonight, the 26th of August, there’ll be free Absinthe. That’s great, right?

Take care.

Baba Yaga’s Hut presents

TRANS AM (US, Thrill Jockey)
w/ LAZER CRYSTAL (US, Thrill Jockey)
w/ HIGAMOS HOGAMOS (UK, DC Recordings / All Time Low)

TRANS AM
http://www.myspace.com/transbandspace
Trans Am is a three-piece band that performs a mix of synthpop and rock music. Their work treads a fine line between spoof and homage, mainly centering on a cerebrally robotic, semi-danceable, minimalistic format, reminiscent of 1980s video game soundtrack music. They are known for constant touring cryptic album artwork, and continual thematic re-invention.

“Trans Am have been one of those super special bands which
those-wot-know have been cranking between Cut Copy and LCD Soundsystem
at house parties and on their blog mixes for longer than we care to
remember” (Drowned in Sound)

Château Flight and Prosumer Join Prins Thomas For Ekstravaganza #4

Following on from last month’s launch party for Prins Thomas’ critically acclaimed self-titled debut album, Corsica Studios and Full Pupp come together once more to transform this small corner of South East London into a disco paradise.

With everyone from the NME and Timeout already hailing his eponymous debut as one of the best albums of 2010, Thomas returns triumphant to Elephant & Castle to spin one of his world famous body-moving sets of cosmic disco and Balearic beats.

Ekstravaganza 4 see’s Thomas joined by fellow Full Pupp artist and DJ, Blackbelt Andersen and, playing a rare live set, Parisian duo Château Flight whose blend of dark disco, house and techno has propelled them into the premier league of French house producers.

Clubbers who pray in the direction of Berlin meanwhile will want to make a beeline for room 2 where Achim Brandenburg aka Prosumer will be playing a 4 hour set. Since his debut on Swayzak’s 240 Volt label in 2004, Achim has been one of Germany’s best DJ/producers with releases on labels like Playhouse, collaborations with Murat Tepeli and Sebo K, and his residency at the legendary Panorama Bar in Berlin.

Joining Achim in steaming up the back room will be London DJ trio, TOTHEBONE, who have been showcasing the best in house and techno at their own parties and nights such as Secret Sundaze and Sud Electronic since 2004.

And Faust, who really need little introduction..

ART:

Memento Mori - Scene V
a collaboration between Daniel Swan and Lucy Stockton

Hovering somewhere between unused science fiction film-set and immersive walk-in installation, MEMENTO MORI allows visitors to partake in the hazy funeral ceremony of a human being that will not exist for fifty generations.

Taking cues from folk tradition, dreams, popular culture and films both real and imagined, a stark vision of a ceremony mutated yet preserved by time and events is presented using our primitive technology. Data projection, sculpture, light, fog and sound combine to produce the immersive and intoxicating environment of a distant future strongly influenced by its past, with dim fluorescents, distant clouds and potted plants reflecting in the elevated black coffin that presides over the scene.

OFF MODERN / 040310

We have reached the 13th Installment of Off Modern and to celebrate this fact we are going all out!

Joining us just before they all jump on a plane to Texas for SWSX, we present to you:

DJANGO DJANGO
http://www.myspace.com/djangotime
It’s almost impossible to box this band in. In the trusted words of the guardian, Django Django are ” Psychedelic art pop at its brilliant best”. Pulsating percussion, fast rhythms, handclaps intertwined with a lot of whiskey, a burning hot sun and a mustang. They are sure to bring that much needed heat to a very icy Elephant & Castle.

+

FRENCH KISSING
http://www.myspace.com/frenchkissingband
Another band to undoubtably take the winter chill away. French Kissing serve up a strong dose of sunbleached 60’s Harmonies and garage pop to go bonkers to. In the word’s of one blogger, French Kissing make Brian Wilson want to put on his speedoes and head back to the beach – enough said.

This Thursday November 5th marks our first anniversary as a collective and it’s about time to give you a little taster of what’s going down at Corsica Studios. Replacing Gaggle, our special guests this month are Loverman who we had the pleasure of putting on at South East in East in the summer.

You’ll remember we posted about Loverman a few months ago and since then they’ve made this superb video for their single Crypt Tonight…
